PROTEST 2023
Several special guests will join us in Whitstable on Saturday 23rd September to tell Southern Water that we have had enough of sewage pollution, which continues to negatively impact the north Kent coast.
The protest will begin at 3pm on Tankerton Slopes, in front of the white lifeguard hut and just down from the Marine Hotel. Be there for 2:45 to avoid missing the start.
Unlike last year, when everyone congregated on the beach, we are planning for everyone to sit on the slopes this time, with the speakers standing below on the promenade.
If it rains we may revert to the beach on safety grounds. We will communicate any change via our social media channels so please keep checking.
Our guest speakers include:
Feargal Sharkey (Singer and campaigner)
Jenny Jones (Green Party peer)
Cat Hobbs (We Own It)
Chris Cornell (Cabinet Minister for Coastal Towns)
With music from China Soul
And a guest appearance from Paul Whitehouse
Why are we Protesting?
Despite ongoing campaigning efforts, Southern Water continue to pump sewage into the sea at Whitstable at an alarming rate.
They released 631 hours of sewage into the sea from Tankerton in 2022, across 202 separate releases.
As of the 24th August 2023, they have already released 588 hours of sewage across 171 releases, with a third of the year remaining.
We do not feel that Southern Water are going far enough or moving fast enough in their efforts to solve this issue, which continues to harm local businesses, damage the environment and, with recent water tests showing high levels of E. Coli after releases, place public health at risk.
Things have to change. If you feel the same, we hope that you’ll join us on Tankerton slopes on the 23rd September where we can make our voiced heard.
